Welcome to the world of romantic suspense! For readers who crave both swoony romance and page-turning danger, romantic suspense offers the best of both worlds. It blends the emotional payoff of a love story with the adrenaline rush of a thriller.
The suspense might involve a serial killer, organized crime, espionage, political intrigue, or a personal threat to one of the characters. The story can exist in the contemporary world, in the past, or in a paranormal, fantasy, or sci-fi world.
Regardless of the setting or danger, romantic suspense forces the protagonists together while raising the stakes of their relationship. Their love grows under pressure as they investigate and/or run for their lives.
What Makes Romantic Suspense Great
Romantic suspense has been a favorite among romance subgenres for decades, and it’s easy to see why. Romantic suspense offers readers:
High Stakes: Danger has a way of stripping away emotional defenses. When characters are forced into life-or-death situations, they often reveal their true selves more quickly than they might in a traditional romance. Emotions run higher, and survival requires building trust quickly.
Page Turning Suspense: The combination of emotional investment and danger creates a reading experience that’s hard to put down. Each chapter answers one question while raising another.

Strong, Capable Characters: Romantic suspense often features characters who don’t cower in the face of danger. That’s not to say they’re unafraid, and sometimes they go into hiding. But when push comes to shove, they face the danger in an effort to take back their lives.

A Perfect Balance of Emotion and Action: One of the most entertaining aspects of romantic suspense is the blend of heart-pounding action and emotional connection. A chase scene might be followed by a quiet moment where the characters finally open up emotionally to each other. Or kiss. Or maybe even celebrate the fact that they’re still alive by having sex.
Popular Romantic Suspense Tropes
Like every corner of the romance genre, romantic suspense includes a wide variety of tropes. Some popular ones include:
The Protector: One character must protect the other from a dangerous threat. This might involve a bodyguard, a law enforcement officer, or someone determined to keep the other safe, even at the risk of their own life. The tension between duty and attraction makes this trope particularly swoonworthy.
Forced Proximity: Danger often forces characters into close quarters, hiding in a cabin, traveling together while on the run, or working side by side to solve a mystery. Being unable to escape each other intensifies the emotional and romantic tension.
Second-Chance Romance: Old lovers reunite when a new threat brings them back together. Unresolved feelings mix with danger, creating delicious conflict and tension.
The Reluctant Partners: Two people who don’t necessarily trust or even like each other must work together to solve a crime or uncover the truth. Who doesn’t enjoy watching enemies become lovers as they escape danger?

These are old-school romantic suspense, but they offer the thrills and chills readers want:
Nora Roberts: Nora has a blend of traditional romance and romantic suspense. Some of my favorite romantic suspense of hers include Midnight Bayou and Naked in Death (under J.D. Robb).
Sandra Brown: Sandra is the queen of making you doubt your protagonists and of the twist you never saw coming. My favorites include The Alibi, Envy, and Fat Tuesday.
Linda Howard: Like Nora and Sandra, Linda is a prolific romantic suspense author. Her most famous book is probably Mr. Perfect, one of the first books to really build buzz (pre-book influencer era). She also had a book in which there was a scene from the point of view of a bear. I can’t remember the name of the book, but I did enjoy that scene!
